A stump is usually somebody else’s leftover. The tree came down years ago, the crew that did it either did not offer grinding or was not asked, and what is left is a hump in the lawn that the mower has to go round, that sprouts, and that quietly feeds whatever is decaying underneath it.

What grinding actually does
The grinder takes the stump down below grade rather than level with it, so there is soil above the remaining wood and you can plant, pave or re-turf over it. Surface roots that run out from the stump get chased and ground as well, because a stump ground flush while its roots stay proud of the lawn just moves the mowing problem outward.
The grindings themselves are a choice. They can be backfilled into the hole, which settles over the following months and is fine if you are re-turfing, or hauled away and the hole topped with clean fill if you want to plant into it soon. Say which you want at the estimate.

What is different about Clearwater ground
Clearwater is not uniform underfoot. Parts of the city sit on sandy fill over a shell base, and shell is hard on grinder teeth, it changes how long a stump takes and how deep it is sensible to go. Older neighborhoods closer to the water tend to have more of it. That is a real cost factor and it is why an honest quote for a stump asks where the stump is, not just how wide it is.
The other Clearwater-specific point is age. A lot of the city’s canopy is mature laurel oak planted in the 1960s and 70s, which is now at the end of its useful life. When one of those comes out, the stump is wide, the root plate is extensive, and the grinding is a bigger job than the trunk diameter suggests.

Grinding takes the stump below grade. Full extraction pulls the root plate and leaves a crater; it is rarely what anyone actually wants, and it costs considerably more.
Stump work is quoted at the same visit as any removal, so there is no second decision to make later.
