Some tree situations can’t wait for a scheduled estimate. A tree down across a driveway, a limb resting on a roof, a trunk split and leaning toward a structure, these call for a different response than routine tree work, and Happy’s Tree Service has been the call Pinellas County makes for this kind of situation since 1989.

If you have an active emergency right now, don’t read the rest of this page first, call (727) 365-1803.

Why the crane mattersA tree already resting on a structure cannot simply be cut. Weight comes off it under control.

What we mean by an emergency

Not every tree problem is an emergency, and knowing the difference helps you get the right response faster:

A tree or large limb already on the ground

especially blocking a driveway, walkway, or road, or resting against a structure, vehicle, or fence.

A tree visibly failing in real time

a fresh trunk split, a root plate lifted and heaving out of the sandy soil, a limb hanging by a strip of bark rather than fully broken free.

Storm or wind damage that’s actively unsafe

not just debris to clean up later, but a compromised tree still standing that could finish failing.

A tree down on or leaning against power lines

call the utility company first for anything involving an energized line; we handle the tree once that side is safe.

If what you’re dealing with is more "there’s a lot of downed limbs and debris to clear" than "something is actively unsafe right now," that’s still urgent but it’s cleanup work, see our storm damage cleanup page, which covers that specifically.

How we actually do it

Emergency calls get triaged by what’s actually at risk, a tree on a person’s path of travel or resting unstably against a structure gets priority over a downed tree in an open yard with nothing under it. We are quick to respond, and the machine that suits the situation is arranged while the crew is on its way rather than afterwards.

On arrival, the first job is assessing whether the tree or limb is under tension, a fallen tree resting against a structure is sometimes still partially supported and can shift unpredictably if cut in the wrong place, so the removal sequence is planned before anyone starts cutting, not figured out as we go. If a tree needs to be lifted off a structure rather than sectioned down onto it, that’s where the crane or man lifts come in, see the crane-assisted removal page for how that process works. Once the immediate hazard is addressed, we clear debris enough to restore safe access to the property.

Happy’s offers emergency tree service, call the moment an active situation comes up.

After the emergency is handled

Once the immediate danger is dealt with, there’s often follow-up work: full debris cleanup (see storm damage cleanup), assessment of nearby trees that may have been weakened by the same event (see tree risk assessment), or cabling on a tree that survived but sustained a structural injury (see cable and bracing). We’ll flag any of that during the emergency visit rather than leave it for you to notice later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually counts as a tree emergency? A tree or major limb already down, a tree resting on a house, car, power line, or fence, a tree that’s visibly failing right now, split trunk, root plate lifted out of the ground, hanging by a thread of bark, or storm damage blocking access to your property. If you’re not sure whether it qualifies, call and describe it; we’d rather you call and be told it can wait than not call about something that genuinely can’t.

Do you offer emergency service? Yes, Happy’s Tree Service offers emergency tree service. Call (727) 365-1803 about an active situation.

A tree is touching a power line, what should I do? Stay well clear and call the power company first for anything touching or near an energized line, that’s a utility crew’s job, not a tree crew’s, until the line is confirmed de-energized or otherwise made safe. Once the utility side is handled, call us for the tree itself.

Will insurance cover emergency tree removal? That depends on your specific policy and the cause of the damage, we’re not in a position to promise coverage. We can document the situation with photos as part of the job, which is often useful for a claim, but the coverage decision itself is between you and your insurer.

What if the tree fell on my house or car? That’s exactly the situation to call immediately about rather than wait on. We’ll assess whether the tree needs to be stabilized before removal (sometimes a fallen tree is still under tension and needs to come off carefully rather than be cut through), and use a crane or man lifts if the tree needs to be lifted rather than cut to come off the structure safely. See the crane-assisted removal page.

Emergency crews cover Clearwater, Largo, St. Petersburg, Dunedin, and the rest of Pinellas County.
