Start with the fact that saves the most phone calls: Clearwater Beach, Sand Key and Island Estates are inside the City of Clearwater. They are not separate beach towns. When you need to know whether a permit applies, Clearwater’s tree ordinance is your answer, not a beach town’s, and not the county’s.

That single fact is also the reason the island is under a tougher rulebook than most barrier islands in Pinellas: Clearwater protects shade trees from four inches DBH and accent trees from two inches, with no homestead exemption and no 24-inch threshold. On a lot with three ornamentals and a hedge line, that catches more than people expect.

A barrier island is a different job site

Everything out here is salt-aerosol exposed, all the time, not just after a storm. The soil is sand that drains before a tree can use the water. Lot frontages are narrow, side setbacks are measured in feet, and there is frequently no rear access at all because the back of the lot is a seawall.

And the way on and off decides the schedule. The Memorial Causeway and the Sand Key bridge are the only routes, which means crane staging on a Saturday afternoon in season is a different proposition from the same job on a Tuesday morning. We plan the access before we plan the cut.

The tree stock reflects the environment: sabal and queen palms, sea grape, buttonwood, oleander, the occasional stubborn live oak on the older Island Estates lots. The failures we see are salt burn, wind shear on over-extended palm crowns, root-zone salinity after surge, and heavy seed and frond drop over walkways, pool decks and boat lifts.

What we bring onto the island

What comes out to your house depends on the tree: a spider lift for a narrow side yard, bucket trucks and grapple trucks for the wood and the brush, and a crane on the picks that need one. On the beach that is a logistics answer rather than a boast: the causeway, the condo association’s work-hours rule and the staging space all get settled before a date is promised.

Debris goes with us. On lots this size there is nowhere to stage a brush pile, and leaving one at the curb is somebody else’s problem by Friday.

Across the island we do palm pruning to standard (not hurricane-cut), removals over seawalls and pool cages, storm and surge cleanup, stump grinding, and canopy work on the inland-species holdouts.

Frequently asked questions

Which city’s tree rules apply on Clearwater Beach? Clearwater’s. The island is inside city limits, so the City of Clearwater Community Development Code governs, and the 24-inch homesteaded threshold people quote from the county does not apply here.

Can you get a crane onto Island Estates? Yes, a crane is often the only way to lift a stem clear on these lots. Staging space and causeway timing are the real constraints, and we work both out before the crew is booked.

My palms went brown after the last surge. Are they dead? Not necessarily, and it is worth an arborist looking before anyone removes them. Salt in the root zone shows up months later, and some species recover from a level of crown damage that looks terminal.

Do you take the debris away? All of it. There is nowhere to leave it out here, and we are not going to make it your neighbor’s view.
