Madeira Beach is two towns sharing one small island, and they need different things from a tree company.
John’s Pass and the Gulf Boulevard frontage is a working commercial waterfront: shops, restaurants, boardwalk, public walkways underneath the plantings, and foot traffic at every hour of the season. Tree work here is a liability and scheduling problem before it is an arboriculture problem, the question is when the work can happen without closing somebody’s frontage, and what happens if a frond comes down on a Saturday afternoon.
The residential fingers off Boca Ciega Bay are the opposite: canal-front homes, seawalls, docks and boat lifts, with a crane reaching over water to take a palm off a lot it cannot drive onto.
We do both, and we plan them completely differently.
Surge is the dominant tree-health issue here, and we are not going to sell around it
This island has taken water. Saltwater inundation does not kill a tree the way wind does, it kills the root system slowly and the crown reports it months later. A palm that survived the storm and looked fine through the following spring can be finished by the summer after, and the decline pattern is consistent enough that an arborist can usually tell you which stage a tree is at rather than guessing.
That matters commercially, because the honest answer on a surge-affected lot is often wait and watch this one, remove that one. Some species tolerate a level of root-zone salinity that looks terminal; some do not recover from far less. Removing everything brown is how a lot loses trees it would have got back.
The other consequence is replanting. A tree bought from an inland nursery and dropped into salt-loaded sand behind a seawall is a tree you will be paying to remove again. Species selection out here is a real decision, not a catalog pick.
What we bring onto the island
What comes out to your house depends on the tree: a spider lift for a narrow side yard, bucket trucks and grapple trucks for the wood and the brush, and a crane on the picks that need one. On the canal lots the crane is not a luxury; it is often the only way to lift a stem clear of a seawall, a dock and a boat lift without touching any of them. On the commercial frontage the grapple truck matters more: get the debris off the street and the walkway open before the next wave of foot traffic.
On a commercial property we will commit to a work window and keep it, and get the walkway open again before the next wave of foot traffic.
Removals, palm maintenance to standard, storm and surge response, stump grinding, structural pruning and full haul-away.

Permits
Madeira Beach is its own incorporated city with its own tree rules, and unusually clean ones, read straight from the city code: a no-fee permit before removing any tree of 4 inches DBH or greater, seven exempt exotics, and a code section that expressly excludes the county’s tree regulations inside city limits (Sec. 106-67). The full walk-through is on the Madeira Beach permit page, with the mangrove law that overrides local codes on the waterfront on the Pinellas beaches permit page.
That mangrove line runs right through this island. Mangroves are regulated under the state Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act with authority delegated to Pinellas County, and the state’s dangerous-tree statute does not reach them. A tree permit is not a mangrove approval.
Before we schedule work here, we call the City for the address.

Frequently asked questions
My palms browned out months after the water. Is that the surge? Very likely. Root-zone salinity shows in the crown long after the event, and the timing fools people into looking for a disease instead. It is worth having assessed before you decide what comes out.
Can you get to a tree on the canal side? Yes, usually by crane from the street side, lifting clear of the seawall, dock and boat lift without touching any of them.
We’re a business on the boardwalk. Can you work outside our hours? That is the normal arrangement here, and an early or late window on a commercial frontage is usually workable if you tell us at the estimate.
What should I replant with? Something that tolerates salt in the root zone and wind off the Gulf, not whatever an inland nursery has in stock. We will give you a list at the estimate rather than guess in a blog post.
