Gulfport is a waterfront town with an inland canopy, which makes it unusual on this coast. Most places on Boca Ciega Bay are palms and sea grape. Gulfport’s residential grid sits under live oaks, dense, mature, closing over the streets, and the town’s identity is tied to keeping them.
That changes what a good tree company should be recommending here. A removal in Gulfport gets scrutiny, from the city and from the neighbors, and a preservation-first answer is usually both the right one and the one that lands.
Gulfport is not St. Petersburg
St. Pete wraps almost entirely around this town, and nearly every caller opens by quoting St. Pete’s rules. They do not apply. Gulfport is an independent city with its own tree article, and it differs from its neighbor on the three points that matter:
The threshold is six inches DBH
not four. It is the highest residential trigger of any jurisdiction we work in.
Palms are completely exempt
every species, any size. No permit, no replacement.
The permit is free
No fee, and for a house that has stood six months or more the entire code-required submittal is a sketch showing the lot and where the tree is.
Mangroves are the exception in the other direction: any size, and trimming counts, not just removal.
Which means there is genuinely no excuse for cutting without the paperwork here, and a real cost if you do. Removing a six-inch tree without the free permit is inch-for-inch replacement plus $100 per tree, an after-the-fact permit is $100, and Gulfport’s zoning chapter makes the building contractor separately guilty alongside the owner. The full picture, with citations, is on the Gulfport tree permit page.
Working a bungalow grid
The physical constraint here is consistent: small lots, houses close to the street, no side access worth speaking of, and the tree always behind the house. What Gulfport does have is alleys, and most of our work here goes in from the back.
What comes out to your house depends on the tree: a spider lift for a narrow side yard, bucket trucks and grapple trucks for the wood and the brush, and a crane on the picks that need one. Almost all of the Gulfport work is done without a machine ever entering the yard, which on lots this size is the difference between a clean job and a rutted lawn.
Along Shore Boulevard and toward Clam Bayou the planting changes to salt-tolerant species, cabbage palm, sea grape, buttonwood, and the legal picture changes with it, because mangrove sits under separate authority.

What the oaks need
Old live oaks over a small grid want a specific program, and it is not a dramatic one: crown cleaning for interior deadwood, selective end-weight reduction on the long horizontal limbs, crown raising for clearance over the street and the alley, and cabling or bracing where a union or a limb is worth supporting rather than cutting.
What they must not get is topping. Gulfport defines "removal" to include pruning a tree down to a stump, and separately makes it unlawful to take more than 50% of the canopy of any tree six inches DBH or larger in a one-year period, a violation whether or not you hold a permit.

Frequently asked questions
Do St. Petersburg’s tree rules apply to me? No. Gulfport is its own city with its own article. St. Pete protects shade trees from four inches; Gulfport’s trigger is six, with palms fully exempt.
How much is a Gulfport tree permit? Nothing. It is the only free tree permit in the county, which is exactly why the $100-per-tree fine for skipping it is so hard to defend.
Do I need a permit for my sabal palms? No. Gulfport exempts palms entirely from the permit, replacement and care-during-development provisions.
Can you reach a tree behind my house? Usually from the alley, and where there is no alley, from the street with rope and a lift. Almost all of our Gulfport work is done without driving anything onto your grass.
