What actually determines wind performance
Three things matter most, and they interact:
Root system depth and spread
A tree with roots that go deep and extend well beyond the canopy’s edge is anchored far better than one with a shallow, compact root plate, regardless of how tall or established the tree looks above ground.
Wood density and flexibility
Dense, strong wood resists breaking; flexible wood (a palm trunk, for instance) can bend under load instead of snapping. Brittle wood does neither well.
Condition, not just species
A structurally sound tree of a moderate-performing species can outlast a neglected or declining tree of a generally strong species. Age, prior storm damage, and whether the tree was ever structurally pruned all shift the odds independent of what species it is.
Species that consistently hold up well

a less extensive root system and a less forgiving trunk than a sabal palm put it among the earlier palm failures in serious wind.
Australian pine
grows tall on a comparatively shallow root plate, a well-known coastal storm vulnerability independent of the tree’s visible health.
