Jacaranda: Brittle Branches and a Short Flowering Window

Jacarandas are stunning for three weeks and brittle for the rest of the year. Structural pruning, storm damage and removal. (727) 365-1803.

“We were looking for a tree service with a certified arborist. We got just what we needed with Happy Tree Service. Steve gave an estimate and knowledgeable advice. They arrived on time did an excellent job and cleaned up all debris. We recommend them and will use them again.”

For about three weeks each spring, jacaranda is the most photographed tree in any Pinellas yard lucky enough to have one, the purple bloom is genuinely spectacular. For the other roughly 49 weeks of the year, it’s a wide-spreading tree with notably brittle wood, and that combination shapes almost everything about how it should be managed.

The brittleness is real, and it’s structural, not a sign of illness

Jacaranda wood fails more readily under wind or weight than most of the other large ornamentals in this county’s landscape. That’s just a characteristic of the species, not evidence that your particular tree is sick or poorly cared for, but it does mean the wide, spreading canopy that makes jacaranda so striking is also the part of the tree most likely to drop a limb, especially where that canopy extends out over a driveway, a patio, or a pool, which is exactly where it’s usually planted for shade.

Structural pruning while it’s young is the real lever

The single most effective thing you can do for a jacaranda’s long-term safety is structural pruning early, while the tree is still young, before co-dominant leaders and weak unions get baked into a canopy that’s now thirty feet across and heavy with limbs. Correcting that structure early doesn’t eliminate the wood’s basic brittleness, but it changes where the tree is likely to fail and how severe that failure is likely to be, which is a meaningfully better position than dealing with a mature tree that was never shaped. See our tree pruning page for how we approach that kind of early structural work.

Timing around the bloom

Because the flowering window is so short and so valued, timing matters. Routine structural pruning is best scheduled while the tree is dormant, outside the spring bloom period, so you’re not cutting into wood that’s about to flower for the sake of a shaping cut that could wait. That said, storm-damaged or genuinely hazardous limbs don’t wait for a convenient season, those come off whenever they need to, bloom window or not.

After a limb comes down

If your jacaranda has already dropped a significant limb, over a driveway, a roofline, or anywhere else that matters, treat it as more than a cleanup job. A large limb failure at a single union can be a sign of a broader structural weakness in the rest of the canopy, and it’s worth having the whole tree assessed rather than just clearing debris and assuming it was a one-time event. See our storm damage cleanup page for the cleanup itself, and our tree risk assessment page for the structural follow-up. When the damage or defect is severe enough that the tree itself is the concern, see our hazardous tree removal page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my jacaranda drop limbs even without a major storm? The wood is genuinely brittle for a tree with this much canopy spread, so failure can happen in conditions a sturdier species would handle fine.

When should I prune a jacaranda to avoid losing the bloom? Structural pruning is best done while the tree is young and dormant, outside the spring bloom window. Hazardous limb removal happens whenever it’s needed.

Is a jacaranda worth the brittle-wood risk? Structural pruning while young meaningfully reduces the risk from co-dominant leaders, though it doesn’t eliminate the wood’s inherent brittleness.

My jacaranda lost a big limb over my driveway. Now what? Have the whole tree assessed, not just the debris cleaned up, a single large failure can signal a broader structural issue.

Frequently asked

Questions we get asked on this one.

Why does my jacaranda drop limbs even without a major storm?

The wood itself is genuinely brittle for a tree with this much canopy spread, so limb failure can happen in wind conditions that a live oak or a magnolia would shrug off. It’s a known trait of the species, not a sign your specific tree is unhealthy.

When should I prune a jacaranda to avoid losing the bloom?

Structural pruning is best done while the tree is young and dormant, outside the spring bloom window, so you’re shaping the tree’s long-term structure rather than cutting into the wood that’s about to flower. Removing storm-damaged or hazardous limbs is a different, as-needed situation regardless of season.

Is a jacaranda worth the brittle-wood risk?

That’s a personal call, but structural pruning while the tree is young meaningfully reduces the risk of the co-dominant leaders that cause the worst failures later, it doesn’t eliminate the wood’s inherent brittleness, but it changes where and how the tree is likely to fail.

My jacaranda lost a big limb over my driveway. Now what?

Have it assessed rather than just cleaning up the debris and moving on, a single large limb failure is sometimes a sign of a broader structural issue at that union, and the rest of the tree is worth a look before you assume it’s an isolated event.
